Let’s say that if for walkers the GPS of a smartphone is useful (even to save one’s life), from my point of view, with its use, we are ‘lost’. Lost for convenience, lost through the imposition of technological corporations, lost because it creates dependence, lost in our mechanistic rejection of ‘wild’ nature. For all the time we concentrate human activities on our smartphones, we are simultaneously and diametrically opposed to nature, looking in the opposite direction. Nature is lost to us, especially for children.” (from Il Giornale dell’Arte, no. 392, 2018).

Labeled as a sculptor, photographer, conceptual and landscape artist, Fulton simply defines himself as a “walking artist” and the father of Walking Art, active since the 1960s alongside figures such as Richard Long. Graduating from St Martin’s College of Art in London, he began walking in field performances, starting with the first collective “artwalk” on 2 February 1967. For him, “If I do not walk, I cannot make a work of art”: every walk—covering more than 25 countries over 50 years—has generated photographs, drawings, murals and texts, in which he narrates the spirit of the places traversed: “The physical involvement of walking creates a receptivity to the landscape… a walk along a road can transform the everyday world.” His art has always arisen from the act of walking; for Fulton, “an object cannot compete with an experience.”

He has exhibited worldwide in both group and solo shows. One of his most iconic performances, Slowalk, took place at Tate Modern in London, in support of Ai Weiwei. His first exhibition with Galleria Michela Rizzo took place in 2012, where he exhibited alongside Richard Nonas, sharing with the American artist the extraordinary ability to reach the essence of things, capturing them in all their facets. In 2014, Galleria Michela Rizzo organised a walk on Mount Etna, which culminated in the solo exhibition Migrant Volcano, hosted at Palazzo Platamone in Catania. With the gallery in 2015, the performance Repetitive Walk took place in the courtyard of Palazzo Ducale in Venice, attended by 216 participants. Since then, numerous projects have been realised in collaboration with the Venetian gallery.

Among other things, in recent years he has presented: Salzweg. Hamish Fulton in Salzkammergut (2024), Bad Ischl (Austria, European Capital of Culture), a solo exhibition inspired by Alpine trails, with textual images and environmental installations; A Walking Artist (2023), a solo show at FRAC Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur in Marseille, focused on the relationships between space, walking, and the visual memory of the landscape. In 2024, he was mentor for the WALKING MOUNTAINS project, curated by Andrea Lerda at the National Mountain Museum in Turin: a collaborative initiative that included walking-performances and residencies dedicated to reflecting on the relationship between walking and the environment. In 2025, he participated in the latest exhibition in the former brewery spaces of Galleria Michela Rizzo with the group show Boulder, of which he was the conceptual core.

www.hamish-fulton.com

Hamish Fulton was born in London in 1946.
